Popular socio-political activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has declared that he would have taken legal action against President Bola Tinubu if his name had appeared on the 2025 Democracy Day National Honours list.
President Tinubu had on Thursday released a list of 102 individuals, both living and deceased, honoured for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development. Some Nigerians expressed surprise that Sowore was not included, given his long-standing activism.
However, responding via a post on his official Facebook page on Friday, Sowore dismissed any suggestion that he should have been named, stating emphatically that he would have not only rejected the honour but sued the president for defamation.
His post read: “If I were mistakenly included by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his ‘National Award’ list, I would not only reject and denounce the award but also take definitive legal action for defamation.”
Sowore’s stance reflects his continued criticism of the current administration and his refusal to be associated with what he describes as a compromised political establishment.
