Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the arrest of at least 53 suspects linked to the recent wave of brutal attacks in Benue and Plateau states, which have claimed dozens of lives and left many others wounded or displaced.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the police chief described the June 13 massacre in Yelewata community, Benue State, as a “coordinated attack of terror.”
According to Egbetokun:
-
26 suspects have been arrested for the Yelewata massacre.
-
22 suspects were apprehended in connection with the Plateau attacks.
-
5 additional suspects were nabbed in Benue over another recent incident.
He disclosed that the Yelewata attack left 47 people dead and 27 injured. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, citing the recovery of two general-purpose machine guns and eight AK-47 rifles used during the carnage.
While investigations are ongoing, the IGP reiterated the police’s commitment to restoring peace and holding all perpetrators accountable. The recent surge in violence across Nigeria’s North Central region has heightened public concern, with calls growing louder for improved security measures and justice for victims.
