The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, arrived in Benue State on Monday to assess the worsening security situation and has immediately ordered the deployment of more tactical teams to the region.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) confirmed the development via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating:
“IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams.”
This move follows a string of deadly attacks across Guma Local Government Area, where suspected herdsmen massacred dozens.
While the state government confirmed 45 deaths, local leaders and residents claim the real toll may surpass 200, with entire families reportedly burned alive during the raids. Some security personnel are also believed to be among the casualties.
Public outrage continues to mount, with many Nigerians demanding that the Federal Government declare a state of emergency in Benue.
Critics have noted the sharp contrast between the government’s muted response to these killings and its swift intervention during the political unrest in Rivers State in March 2025, where a state of emergency was declared despite no reported deaths.
As investigations continue, the IGP’s presence and new tactical deployments aim to restore public confidence and prevent further violence.
