John Brenkus, the six-time Emmy Award-winning host and co-creator of ESPN’s Sport Science, has died at the age of 54 following a prolonged battle with depression.

The news was confirmed via a statement shared on his official social media accounts on Sunday, June 1, stating:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away. John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy Award-winning Sport Science, had been battling depression. John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025.”

The family requested privacy and encouraged those struggling with depression to seek support.

John Brenkus was widely recognized for his innovative contributions to sports broadcasting through Sport Science, where he combined advanced technology with scientific analysis to uncover the mechanics behind elite athletic performance—exploring elements like momentum, gravity, and friction to explain how sports really work.

Tributes have poured in from fans and industry colleagues alike:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote: “This is incredibly sad. John was so good at what he did. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, John.”

Robert Griffin III, former NFL quarterback, added: “Prayers up for John Brenkus and his family.”

Kristi Dosh, a former ESPN contributor, remembered: “Sport Science was an incredible show, and I never heard anything but good things about him during my time at ESPN.”

John Brenkus had been candid about his mental health struggles. In a 2023 interview with former NFL player Marcellus Wiley, he spoke about a pivotal moment when he nearly took his life, but a call to his mother changed his course.

“There’s something wrong with me. I am mentally lost,” he recalled. “I then went through a battle — I mean, I’m telling you, a battle — to get out of it.”

John Brenkus is remembered not only for his trailblazing work in sports media, but also for his honesty, creativity, and courage. His legacy lives on in the countless athletes, viewers, and aspiring creators inspired by his work.
