Kenneth Okonkwo Accuses Peter Obi of Betrayal Amid Labour Party Crisis

Veteran actor and former Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused Peter Obi of betrayal over the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

In a viral interview with Symfoni, Okonkwo alleged that Obi ignored his warnings and re-aligned with the embattled Julius Abure-led faction, despite serious concerns about the group’s integrity and democratic values.

Okonkwo claimed that party executives misled Obi into believing that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had formally recognized the Abure leadership.

“If anyone betrayed the other, I can emphatically say that Peter Obi betrayed me,” Okonkwo said. “I warned him that this move would ruin his political career and undermine his integrity, but he went back to them regardless.”

He added that despite private appeals urging Obi to distance himself from the faction—alleged to be “agents of the government” tasked with destabilizing the party—Obi publicly endorsed them within days.

Okonkwo revealed that while Obi later attempted to present himself as neutral following INEC’s distancing from the Abure faction, the damage had been done.

The Labour Party has been locked in a bitter internal battle over its national leadership, with allegations of financial misconduct and anti-democratic practices leveled against the Abure camp.

Okonkwo officially left the party in February 2025, citing the unresolved crisis and deviations from the party’s reformist principles.
