The Lagos State Government has firmly denied any involvement in the alleged demolition of a property linked to the brother of Mr. Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the claim as “baseless” and “disturbing,” insisting that no arm of the Lagos State Government—including the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA)—was responsible for any such demolition.
“We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other arm of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition,” Omotoso said.
His position was reinforced by Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS & Urban Development, who also confirmed that LASBCA had no involvement in the matter.
Disappointment Over Peter Obi’s Allegation
The state government expressed concern over Obi’s public accusation without what it called proper verification.
“We find it disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts,” the statement read.
Commitment to Rule of Law
Omotoso reiterated the government’s zero tolerance for lawlessness, affirming that any parties found guilty of illegal demolition or trespass would face consequences.
“We will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violations of extant laws. Any individual or group found involved in such acts will be brought to justice.”
Independent Investigation Ordered
To establish the true circumstances surrounding the incident, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed a full investigation. The Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, has been tasked with liaising with LASBCA to conduct a thorough inquiry.
“We have directed the Permanent Secretary… to request a full investigation by the Lagos State Building Control Agency into this matter,” the government confirmed.
The development has stirred controversy, especially due to Peter Obi’s prominence in Nigerian politics. All eyes are now on the outcome of the investigation, as tensions rise over the ownership and demolition claims.
