Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye could be facing a four-year ban after being referred to Italy’s disciplinary commission on allegations of sporting fraud.
The 25-year-old Udinese shot-stopper is under investigation by Italian authorities for allegedly receiving a yellow card deliberately during a Serie A match against Lazio on March 11, 2024. He was booked in the 64th minute for time-wasting while Udinese held a narrow 2-1 lead at the Dacia Arena.
Unlike standard irregular betting infractions, Okoye’s case has been escalated as sporting fraud — a more serious offense under Italian football regulations.
The Super Eagles international, who transferred from Watford to Udinese in the summer of 2023, is being investigated alongside three associates.
If found guilty, Okoye could be suspended from football activities for up to four years, casting uncertainty over his club and international career.
