EERC Orders MainPower to Refund Overbilled Enugu Customers for April 2025
The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has ordered MainPower Electricity Distribution Company to refund over 20,000 customers who were overbilled in the April 2025 billing cycle.
The directive was issued following an extensive investigation into MainPower’s billing practices, which uncovered a significant rise in estimated billing violations.
In a joint statement released on Monday, EERC Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo and Commissioner for Market Operations, Reuben Okoye, confirmed that the company had breached regulated billing procedures, leading to unjust overcharges.
“The commission has issued an Order to MainPower to refund the affected customers the overbilled units for energy consumed in April 2025,” the notice read.
Refund Deadline and Transparency Measures
To ensure accountability, EERC announced that the full list of affected customers has been published on its official website. MainPower is mandated to complete all refunds before the July 2025 billing cycle, either through unit rollbacks or billing adjustments.
Regulatory Crackdown on Estimated Billing
This move underscores EERC’s commitment to consumer protection and its crackdown on estimated billing abuse, a widespread issue affecting electricity consumers in Nigeria.
The commission reaffirmed its dedication to fair billing and urged customers to regularly check their bills and report anomalies.
