Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle remains hopeful that Nigeria can still secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the challenging path ahead.
The three-time African champions are in a difficult position following an underwhelming start to their qualifying campaign. Currently, they sit in fourth place in their group, trailing group leaders South Africa by six points.
With only four matches left to revive their chances, Eric Chelle believes a turnaround is still possible.
The team recently clinched the Unity Cup invitational tournament in London, a morale-boosting achievement that could inject renewed confidence ahead of the crucial qualifying fixtures scheduled for September and October.
However, the Malian coach stressed the need for greater effort and commitment from the players to reach their goal.
“We scored goals, created chances and showed good signs in our overall play,” Eric Chelle said while reflecting on the team’s performance at the Unity Cup.
“What matters most is playing together – in both attack and defence.
We have to keep improving both physically and mentally. We must become true warriors on the pitch.”
The Super Eagles are set to host Rwanda’s Amavubi in Uyo and will then travel to face South Africa when the qualifiers resume in September.
