Federal Government Fulfills 30-Year-Old Promise to 1994 Super Eagles Squad with House Allocations

Federal Government Fulfills 30-Year-Old Promise to 1994 Super Eagles Squad with House Allocations

After nearly three decades, the Federal Government has finally honored its 1994 pledge by allocating houses to members of the legendary Super Eagles team that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia.

The long-awaited fulfillment was confirmed in a statement published Wednesday on the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s official website.

One of the beneficiaries, former Super Eagles striker Efan Ekoku, received an official letter of house allocation in Abuja. He was represented at the presentation ceremony by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun.

Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of the Department of Public Building and Housing Development, handed over the letter on behalf of the Minister of Housing. Temitope emphasized that this move reflects the government’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding national heroes whose efforts brought pride and unity to the nation.

“This gesture is part of our responsibility to honor the commitment made to these great patriots who served the country with distinction,” Temitope stated.

The housing promise was originally made following Nigeria’s historic AFCON victory in 1994 but remained unfulfilled for 28 years. It wasn’t until former President Muhammadu Buhari approved its implementation in 2022 that the process gained traction.

Homes are being distributed across various states to members of the squad, with some, like Ekoku, receiving theirs in the Federal Capital Territory.

This act is being widely praised as a long-overdue but significant step toward acknowledging the lasting legacy of one of Nigeria’s most iconic football teams.
