Afrobeat queen Tiwa Savage has opened up about how she confidently approached music mogul Don Jazzy to join Mavin Records after being previously overlooked during the Mo’Hits era.
In a recent interview with Afrobeats Intelligence, the Somebody’s Son hitmaker revealed that she made what she called a “shameless” request to be signed after Don Jazzy launched his new label, Mavin Records.
“When Don Jazzy started Mavin, I went to him and said, ‘Can you sign me now? Because you didn’t sign me in Mo’Hits before,’” Savage recounted. “I asked again. Wow. Oh my God. I don’t have shame. And then he just said yes, like that.”
Tiwa also reflected on the unique family-like bond she shared with fellow Mavin artists, a dynamic she says she misses now that she’s with a different label.
“Mavin was like family — if something happened online or personally, I could run to Jazzy’s room, and everyone — Sid, Tega, Reekado — would gather. We’d cry, talk, laugh. You don’t get that in most labels. Now, with Empire, it’s just business.”
Savage credits her Mavin experience for shaping her into both a stronger artist and businesswoman, stressing the importance of knowing who you sign to in the music industry.
