An Uber driver, Percy Bhengu, has resurfaced with claims that South African Gqom star Babes Wodumo still owes him R900 for services rendered six years ago.
Bhengu, who worked as a full-time Uber driver in 2019, took to the artist’s social media page this week to demand payment and warn others against similar experiences with celebrity clients.
He claims that what began as an exciting opportunity to drive Babes Wodumo and her sister, Nondumiso Simelane, to gigs turned into frustration after he was left unpaid.
Speaking to Sunday World, Bhengu explained that his first trip transporting the star’s sister to Pongola went smoothly, and he was compensated.
However, on a subsequent job to transport Babes and Nondumiso to a DJ Tira event in KwaMashu, the singer reportedly borrowed cash from him to buy sanitary pads—promising to refund him—which she never did.
After several detours and a final trip to Durban’s Shaka Marine, Bhengu said he received neither payment for his services nor reimbursement for the borrowed cash.
Despite repeated efforts to contact Babes Wodumo and her sister, Bhengu claims he has been blocked and ignored.
“It may not sound like much, but that’s my money,” he said. “With interest, who knows how much that would be today? I just want what I worked for.”
Bhengu admits he did not pursue the case in Small Claims Court, hoping they would eventually settle the debt. Now, he says he has gone public to prevent others in the gig economy from facing similar treatment.
As of this report, Babes Wodumo has not issued any official response regarding the allegations.
