Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially announced the restoration of peace in Rivers State following months of political unrest.
Wike revealed that he, suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and members of the State House of Assembly have resolved their long-standing political rift. The minister made the announcement after leading Fubara and the lawmakers to a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Thursday night.
The political crisis in Rivers had led to the suspension of Governor Fubara for six months, a declaration of a state of emergency, and the appointment of a Sole Administrator to manage the state during the period.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Wike expressed optimism about the renewed unity among political actors in the state:
“Peace has finally returned to the state, we will work together with the governor and the governor has agreed to work with us.”
He added that disagreements are natural in political families but must be resolved in due time.
“We are members of the same political family and yes, we are humans so there will be time for disagreement and time to settle your disagreement, that has been settled today,” he said.
Wike noted that the delegation visited the President to inform him of the peace deal and urged all stakeholders to embrace unity moving forward:
“We have come to report to Mr President that this is what we have agreed; so for me everything is over and I enjoy [urge] everybody who wants to work with us to work with everybody as there will be no more acrimony.”
