Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has marked a major milestone in his career, celebrating 10 years since his debut with the Nigerian national team.
The 31-year-old took to social media to express deep gratitude and reflect on his journey with the team.
Troost-Ekong made his senior debut on June 13, 2015, in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Chad, playing the full 90 minutes. The moment, he says, changed his life — and it was all made possible by the late Stephen Keshi, fondly known as “The Big Boss,” who handed him his first cap.
“10 YEARS REPRESENTING 🇳🇬 13.06.2015 – 06.06.2025,” he wrote on X.
“I will never forget the ‘Big Boss’ Stephen Keshi for believing in me to make my debut in Kaduna that day a decade ago.”
A Decade of Dedication
Over the past decade, Troost-Ekong has earned 79 caps, participated in five major tournaments, and won three medals for Nigeria, including a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics and another at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, he led Nigeria as captain, scoring three goals and helping the Super Eagles secure a runner-up finish.
His commanding performances earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award of the tournament, further cementing his legacy.
A Leader, A Patriot
The defender, who has become a vocal leader on and off the pitch, described wearing the captain’s armband as the greatest honour of his life.
“79 caps, 5 major tournaments, 3 medals later. It is my biggest pride to be the captain of this nation and team.
No dream is ever too big. This is my purpose, and I will continue to strive to be better every day. GRATEFUL!”
As Troost-Ekong looks ahead to the future, fans and teammates alike continue to celebrate his unwavering dedication, leadership, and impact on Nigerian football.
