The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has announced the indefinite suspension of Nollywood actress Shirley Igwe following allegations of violence and gross indiscipline on a movie set in Lagos.
In a statement released by Ifeoma Okeke, Chief of Staff to the AGN National President, the suspension follows a preliminary investigation into reports that Igwe slapped a crew member during a heated altercation on set.
The incident, allegedly captured on video and circulated on social media, has drawn widespread criticism from both industry stakeholders and fans.
“Following our preliminary investigation into the allegation of violence leveled against actress Shirley Igwe on a film set in Lagos, the National Executive Council has resolved to place her on an indefinite suspension,” the statement read.
AGN Warns Against Collaborations with Shirley Igwe
The guild described Igwe’s actions as “unprofessional misconduct” that could bring the acting profession into disrepute. As a result, the AGN has barred all members from participating in any film production involving the actress until further notice.
“This suspension is due to her unprofessional misconduct, violence, and indiscipline. The Guild also directed members of AGN to refrain from participating in any film production involving Shirley Igwe,” the statement added.
A Look at Shirley Igwe’s Career
Shirley Igwe rose to fame in the early 2010s as a Delta Soap model and gradually transitioned into acting roles in Nollywood.
In 2013, she made headlines when she was appointed Principal Protocol Officer to then Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha. After a brief hiatus from acting, she returned to Nollywood and began producing films.
Despite her relatively low profile in recent years, the latest incident has thrust Igwe back into the spotlight — albeit for the wrong reasons.
What’s Next?
With the suspension now in effect, AGN has confirmed it will launch a more in-depth review of the matter to determine any further disciplinary action. It remains unclear whether Igwe will face any legal or civil consequences related to the incident.
As of the time of this report, Shirley Igwe has not issued an official statement in response to the allegations or the suspension.
