Enugu Electricity Commission Slashes Tariff for Band A Customers to N160/kWh

Tinubu’s minister explains why the national electricity grid will continue to collapse

The Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a significant reduction in electricity tariff for Band A customers in Enugu State, dropping the rate from N209 per kilowatt-hour to N160/kWh. The new tariff will take effect on August 1, 2025.

The directive was communicated through the EERC’s latest Tariff Order (Order No. EERC/2025/003) issued to MainPower Electricity Distribution Ltd, the primary electricity distributor in the state.

According to the commission, the downward tariff adjustment was based on cost-reflective analysis and aligns with the Enugu State Government’s subsidy initiatives aimed at making power more affordable for residents.

“This review reflects the state’s efforts to ease the burden of high electricity costs on consumers and encourage more equitable access to power,” the EERC stated.

The decision is grounded in the Enugu State Electricity Law of 2023, which grants the EERC full authority to regulate power generation, transmission, and distribution within the state. This move was made possible following the 2023 Constitutional Amendment that empowered individual states to legislate and manage electricity independently.

Governor Peter Mbah signed the Enugu Electricity Law into effect in September 2023, replacing the former Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005. The new framework establishes a localized regulatory environment tailored to Enugu’s energy needs.

The tariff cut is expected to benefit thousands of Band A customers, who typically enjoy the most stable supply but previously faced the highest electricity rates.
