LONDON, July 13, 2025 — Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away in London, according to a statement released by his family on Saturday.
The statement, signed by his former spokesperson Garba Shehu, confirmed that Buhari died peacefully in a private clinic in the United Kingdom after a brief illness. The family described his passing as “a great national loss” and prayed for his soul to rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
Born on December 17, 1942, Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, after previously ruling as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985. He was known for his staunch anti-corruption agenda, his controversial economic policies, and efforts to fight insurgency in the northeast.
During his two-term civilian presidency, Buhari implemented key infrastructure projects and promoted agricultural development, but was also criticized over rising insecurity, economic challenges, and alleged human rights abuses.
He is survived by his wife Aisha Buhari, children, and grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
