Presidential aide Daniel Bwala has criticized U.S.-based journalism professor Farouq Kperogi over his recent claim that former First Lady Aisha Buhari divorced her late husband, Muhammadu Buhari, before his death.
Kperogi, a professor at Kennesaw State University, alleged in a social media post that the former First Lady had parted ways with her husband based on what he described as “inside sources.” The claim has since been publicly debunked.
Reacting on Tuesday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Bwala described the statement as an example of “lies, blackmail, and fake news” that have become common in today’s media space.
He accused Kperogi of spreading falsehoods under the cover of journalism without proper investigation or ethics.
“There is nothing new under the heavens. Don’t let anybody hide under the pretext of journalism to blackmail you,” Bwala wrote.
He added that the rise of social media has equipped Nigerians with the ability to challenge and debunk fake news in real time.
Bwala’s comments come amid growing concerns over misinformation being circulated by both mainstream and online commentators.
