Canadian rap superstar Drake has stirred debate in the global hip-hop community after boldly declaring that UK rappers are the best in the world, surpassing even their American counterparts in lyrical skill.
The Grammy-winning artist made the statement on Saturday night, July 12, during his headline performance at the Wireless Festival in London.
“When I talk about my love for London and London rappers – the best lyricists in the world. Mark my words,” Drake said to the cheering crowd. “I don’t care what anybody says, nobody can out-rap London. Nobody.”
Drake added that while he meant no disrespect to American rap or his Canadian roots, his admiration for UK lyricism remains unmatched.
“No disrespect to America, no disrespect to my country, but nobody in the world can out-rap London rappers. This is the best, highest level. And this is what I inspire to be.”
Drake’s comments have since gone viral online, with fans and artists across both continents weighing in on the US vs UK rap supremacy debate. While some praised him for recognizing the growth and influence of UK rap, others questioned the claim, citing heavyweights in the American rap scene.
This is not the first time Drake has shown love for the UK music industry. He has collaborated with British acts like Giggs, Skepta, Headie One, and Central Cee, and even sampled UK drill sounds in his own music.
