Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria (RTSL Nigeria), a global public health organization focused on combating cardiovascular diseases and epidemic threats.
The announcement was made on Friday by RTSL Nigeria, which has operated in Abuja since 2022, collaborating with governments and communities to fight some of the world’s most dangerous health challenges.
Welcoming the appointment, Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, stated:
“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Fashola to the RTSL Nigeria Board of Directors. He has demonstrated a commitment to improving lives and livelihoods in Nigeria through more than two decades of public service.”
Fashola’s public service record includes serving as Minister of Power, Works and Housing under President Muhammadu Buhari and as Governor of Lagos State from 2007 to 2015. Notably, he played a key role in Nigeria’s successful management of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, a contribution that earned him international acclaim, including the Stephen J. Solarz Award from the International Crisis Group.
In his acceptance speech, Fashola expressed his enthusiasm for the role:
“I look forward to helping continue the progress in stopping preventable deaths from cardiovascular diseases and infectious disease outbreaks.”
Professor Ibrahim Abubakar, fellow board member and Dean of the Faculty of Population Health Sciences at University College London, also praised the appointment, describing Fashola’s leadership experience and crisis management background as a significant asset to the organization.
