Fatima Alkali, one of three individuals recently nominated by President Bola Tinubu to serve as commissioners in the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC), has formally declined the appointment.
Alkali, who was nominated to represent the North-East geopolitical zone, turned down the offer and communicated her decision directly to the presidency, according to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.
Her withdrawal was disclosed on Tuesday during the committee’s report presentation at the National Assembly. The two other nominees—Dakas Dakas (North-Central) and Uchenna Okolocha (South-South)—both appeared before the committee for screening.
The committee confirmed that the remaining nominees met all necessary qualifications and subsequently recommended their approval. The Senate went on to confirm Dakas and Okolocha through a voice vote.
A replacement nominee is expected for the North-East slot, with sources suggesting that the presidency may prioritize a female candidate to maintain gender balance on the commission.
The Nigerian Law Reform Commission plays a crucial role in reviewing and updating the country’s laws to reflect contemporary realities and ensure the effectiveness of the justice system.
