Femi Adesina, the former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has dismissed widespread speculation about a rift between Buhari and his wife, Aisha Buhari, before his death.
In a heartfelt tribute, Adesina revealed that Aisha Buhari was by her husband’s side in Kaduna as recently as March 2025, shortly before the former president embarked on his final medical trip to London, where he passed away in June 2025.
His statement directly contradicts reports by Professor Farooq Kperogi, a U.S.-based academic, who claimed that Aisha had divorced Buhari, moved out, and reverted to her maiden name, Halilu.
Kperogi also alleged that when Buhari’s health deteriorated and a trip to London was advised, Aisha refused to accompany him, allegedly saying she was no longer his wife.
However, Adesina offered a different account, writing:
“It was Ramadan, and I joined him [Buhari] for dinner. The former First Lady, Aisha, was around and offered me some roasted meat (suya).”
He added:
“Less than two weeks later, he travelled to London for what was said to be a routine medical trip. It lasted almost four months and he never returned, at least not alive.”
The former presidential aide’s revelation seeks to put to rest persistent rumors surrounding the late president’s personal life and final days.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died in London in June 2025 following an extended period of illness. His death marked the end of an era and triggered both tributes and controversies.
