“He and My Father Meet at the Gates of Hell” – Kemi Olunloyo Reacts to Buhari’s Death

Kemi Olunloyo Reacts to Buhari’s Death

Controversial Nigerian investigative journalist, Kemi Olunloyo, has stirred strong reactions online following her blunt and scathing response to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.

In a post shared on her Facebook page, Olunloyo didn’t mince words as she reflected on Buhari’s legacy. She claimed that the late former military and civilian leader would now be meeting her own late father, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, for the first time — not in heaven, but “at the gates of hell.”

“Finally, Buhari and my father, Olunloyo, meet for the FIRST TIME at the Gates of Hell,” she wrote.

She added that, in her view, Buhari’s military regime was responsible for the unjust imprisonment and execution of journalists, a period she sees as a dark time in Nigeria’s press history.

“I hope everyone he locked up is released, and all the journalists he executed during his military reign continue to rest in peace,” she said.

Olunloyo also questioned Buhari’s reported age, suggesting he may have been older than officially declared.

“I hope his family can now tell the world he was 89 and not 82, because he was 48 — the same age as my dad in 1983 — when he took over Shagari’s democracy.”

She concluded her message with a sarcastic farewell:

“SUN RE OOO BOO HARRY,” using a blend of Yoruba and mock affection to close out the post.

The remarks come amid nationwide mourning for Buhari, whose death has drawn tributes from world leaders, Nigerian politicians, and public figures. Olunloyo’s reaction, however, underscores the deep divisions in how his legacy is perceived — from hero to villain, patriot to authoritarian.

As expected, her statement has gone viral across social platforms, drawing both support and backlash from Nigerians reacting to the tone and timing of her message.
