Nollywood actor IK Ogbonna has shared profound insights into the often-overlooked issues plaguing modern marriages, particularly those involving African men and powerful, independent women.
Taking to his Instagram page, Ogbonna reflected on the silent battles that can arise between couples when ego, pride, culture, and ambition collide.
According to him, many African men are raised with the mindset to lead but lack the emotional tools to navigate relationships with equally strong women.
He wrote:
“One of the most untalked about issues in modern marriages, especially among African men and powerful women, is the silent battles for identity and control.
It doesn’t always start as conflict. In fact, it often begins with admiration. He is drawn to her strength. She is attracted to his confidence.”
Ogbonna explained that problems often emerge as admiration turns into an unconscious power struggle:
“Ego meets ego. Pride meets independence. Culture meets ambition.
Many women, especially those who have built their own, are taught to protect their independence, but not always how to be vulnerable without feeling small.”
He emphasized that such struggles are not necessarily rooted in a lack of love but rather in the absence of proper emotional education:
“What starts as love becomes a power struggle. Not because they don’t love each other. But no one taught them to love each other’s strengths without feeling threatened.”
Ogbonna concluded that these dynamics often lead to unspoken resentments, emotional distance, and eventual disconnection in relationships:
“This is the root of many unspoken fights, resentments, distance, and ego wars. And sadly, many never talk about it. They just drift.”
