In a heartfelt tribute, Liverpool Football Club has announced that the number 20 shirt will be immortalised in honour of their late forward, Diogo Jota.
The club confirmed the development on Thursday via its official website, following the shocking death of Jota in a fatal car crash in Spain, which also claimed the life of his younger brother, Andre Silva.
According to the club, retiring the No. 20 jersey is a symbol of respect and remembrance for Jota’s immense contribution to Liverpool’s historic 2024–2025 Premier League title win—the club’s 20th English top-flight crown.
One of the most memorable highlights of Jota’s season was his trademark shimmy goal that clinched victory in April’s Merseyside derby, which now holds even deeper emotional weight as the final goal of his career and life.
Diogo Jota, who passed away at the age of 28, is survived by his wife, Rute, and their three children. His legacy will live on not just in statistics and trophies, but in the hearts of fans and teammates who cherished him both on and off the pitch.
