Popular actress, TV host, and MC Nomalanga Shozi is embarking on a major new chapter in her career, taking on her first-ever lead role in the upcoming BET Africa original drama series, Black Gold.
Premiering 18 August 2025, the show will air Monday to Thursday at 18:30 on DStv Channel 129 and is co-produced by Black Brain Pictures and BET Africa.
In Black Gold, Nomalanga stars as Amandla Zungu, a fiercely determined young woman whose world crumbles when she is falsely accused of her father’s death.
Betrayed by her scheming stepmother, Florence Zungu (played by veteran actress Dawn Thandeka King), Amandla is forced out of her family home and thrust into the treacherous underworld of illegal mining.
Despite the odds, Amandla’s story becomes one of grit, survival, and vengeance as she climbs the ranks in the mining mafia and fights to reclaim her birthright and confront those who destroyed her life.
The drama thickens with Florence’s secret alliance with her lover Tom Motsepe, portrayed by iconic actor Sello Maake KaNcube.
Set in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, Black Gold promises edge-of-your-seat drama, intense betrayals, and a gripping narrative packed with emotional depth.
“Creating Black Gold was a game-changing experience – it shook us as much as it will shake the audience,” said Mandla N, Executive Director at Black Brain Pictures.
Monde Twala, Senior Vice President of Paramount Africa and BET International, described the series as:
“A celebration of African storytelling at its finest – rich in culture, layered in emotion, and driven by a stellar cast… Black Gold is a tribute to black resilience, black love, and the unbreakable spirit of our communities.”
