Political commentator and former presidential aide Reno Omokri has dismissed claims that Peter Obi will emerge as the sole presidential candidate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Omokri argued that despite recent talks of a coalition of opposition parties, there is no unity among the key political figures involved, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Chibuike Amaechi, all of whom have signaled interest in running.
“There is no coalition. What you’re just seeing is egos—different egos,” Omokri said.
He claimed that all those currently involved in the so-called coalition were unsuccessful candidates in the 2023 election and are now trying to regroup without any concrete agreement or consensus.
“You’re forming a loser’s convention. Why should I be afraid of you? When you gather negative thinkers together, there’s more negativity.”
Tinubu Has No Reason to Fear the Opposition
Omokri emphasized that President Bola Tinubu has no reason to be worried about the opposition’s plans for 2027.
He described the ongoing discussions among opposition leaders as mere political posturing, lacking strategic coordination or a unified vision.
When reminded that Obi and Atiku collectively secured 54% of the votes in 2023, far ahead of Tinubu’s 37%, Omokri maintained that those numbers don’t guarantee unity moving forward.
“If Peter Obi says he’s running, and Atiku says he’s running, and Amaechi is submitting a proposal to the ADC for a one-term presidency—where is the coalition? That’s not unity, that’s ego.”
Peter Obi’s Chances with ADC Slim – Omokri
On the possibility of Obi contesting under the ADC, Omokri flatly rejected the idea, stating that Obi lacks the influence and political capital within the party to clinch the ticket.
“The man [Obi] has said he’s definitely going to run, but based on what has happened in the past, it’s very unlikely he gets the ADC ticket. I have a good idea who’s likely going to get it—it will probably go to a Northerner.”
According to Omokri, the ongoing speculations about a grand coalition to unseat Tinubu are baseless and overhyped, as none of the parties involved have been able to agree on a joint candidate.
