In what has sparked fresh drama at the National Assembly, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, spokesperson for the Nigerian Senate, has dismissed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s bid to return to plenary as nothing more than a theatrical display aimed at social media attention. He likened her action to “skit making” and claimed it undermines the dignity of the legislature.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, had arrived at the National Assembly complex on Tuesday, July 22, seeking to resume her senatorial duties after a six-month suspension.
Her move followed an Abuja court ruling that described her suspension as excessive and recommended that she be recalled.
Despite the court’s directive, security at the National Assembly denied her access, blocking her from entering the chambers.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Senator Adaramodu maintained that the senator’s approach to enforcing the court ruling was wrong and theatrically charged.
“The National Assembly has a lot of roles to play. We are legislators and lawmakers, not spectators to be watching skit making and content creation,” Adaramodu said.
He added that although individuals have the right to seek legal redress, it is not their responsibility to enforce court rulings on their own.
“Even when any litigant goes to court and gets judgment, either the person feels that this is an order when that is not an order, the litigant does not enforce the order by himself or herself. There are court bailiffs who serve such orders.”
Senator Adaramodu further mocked Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions, likening the ongoing controversy to a “season film.”
“Initially I said all these episodes and saga are about content creation. Now that the content has been created, it’s degenerating into a season film. We are lawmakers, not actors. Nigerians can see this for what it really is.”
The Senate had suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan following a heated confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and her subsequent accusation that he s*xually harassed her — a claim that sparked public debate and backlash within the Senate.
