U.S. tech billionaire Elon Musk has issued an apology following a major disruption in high-speed internet services provided by his company, Starlink, which left users around the world offline for about 2.5 hours on Thursday night.
In a brief post on X (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk wrote, “Sorry for the outage,” assuring users that SpaceX is working to identify and fix the root cause of the disruption to prevent future occurrences.
The outage, one of Starlink’s largest to date, was reportedly triggered by a failure in internal software systems. Tens of thousands of users across various countries were affected.
SpaceX, which operates the Starlink satellite internet service, has launched over 8,000 satellites since the network’s rollout began in 2020.
In Nigeria, Starlink recently resumed activations nationwide after a regulatory pause last year. High-demand areas like Lagos and Abuja are leading the current wave of service reactivations.
The company had previously halted new activations between October and November 2024 due to regulatory concerns after it increased subscription prices without the Nigerian Communications Commission’s approval. The Internet provider currently serves more than 60,000 subscribers in the country.
