Stevie Wonder responds to rumours about his blindness

Legendary musician Stevie Wonder has finally responded — with both humour and heart — to the decades-old conspiracy theories suggesting he isn’t really blind.

During a stop on his Love, Light and Song UK Tour in Cardiff, Wales, the 75-year-old music icon addressed the persistent rumours that have followed him for most of his career, making light of the speculation while reaffirming the truth.

“I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking — ‘When did I want to let the world know this?’ But I wanted to say it right now,” Wonder began, pausing as the audience leaned in.

“You know there have been rumours about me seeing and all that? But seriously, you know the truth. Truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind.”

The Grammy-winning artist — who lost his sight as an infant due to complications from premature birth — has often been at the centre of lighthearted (and at times absurd) speculation, with viral stories suggesting he can see. But on stage, he took the moment to reflect on how his blindness has shaped a deeper way of seeing the world.

“Now, that was a blessing,” he continued.
“Because it’s allowed me to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight. See people in the spirit of them, not how they look. Not what colour they are, but what colour is their spirit?”

Despite his legendary status and global acclaim, Stevie Wonder has frequently found himself the subject of bizarre anecdotes. In 2019, Shaquille O’Neal famously joked that Wonder “recognized him in an elevator.” In 2016, comedian Anthony Anderson jokingly claimed he believed Stevie’s blindness was “just an act” after he challenged him to a basketball game.

While these playful tales have fed the meme culture surrounding Stevie Wonder, the music legend’s recent statement brings the conversation back to truth — and grace.

Stevie Wonder’s enduring legacy spans six decades and includes 25 Grammy Awards, countless hits like Superstition, Isn’t She Lovely, and I Just Called to Say I Love You, and now, a touching reminder that true vision goes beyond the eyes.
