British grime pioneer Skepta has boldly declared an end to the era of UK rappers being underrated, stating that the time has come for British hip-hop artists to get the global recognition they truly deserve.
In a recent interview with Link Up TV, Skepta spoke passionately about his recent challenge to U.S. rappers for a lyrical showdown between American and British talents. According to him, the aim was not to belittle U.S. artists, but to highlight the strength, skill, and evolution of the UK rap scene.
“My challenge to US rappers was me saying it is time to get the respect we [UK rappers] deserve.
It wasn’t from a place of ‘we are going to annihilate them’ even though I feel that is definitely possible.
It is more of—we want the respect,” he said.
Skepta’s comments have reignited the UK vs US rap debate, with fans and artists weighing in from both sides of the Atlantic.
Joining the conversation, Drake, a long-time supporter of UK music, made a powerful statement during his headline performance at Wireless Festival in London over the weekend. Speaking midway into his set, the Canadian superstar firmly sided with British rappers, declaring:
“No rapper from anywhere in the world can defeat English rappers in a rap battle.”
The statement drew loud cheers from the London crowd and further solidified Drake’s role as an honorary champion of the UK rap scene. Over the years, he has collaborated with several British acts including Skepta, Dave, Giggs, and Central Cee, frequently praising the country’s raw talent and authenticity.
