President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been conferred with one of the highest national honours of Saint Lucia — the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL).
This was announced in a post on the official X handle of the Office of the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, which confirmed that the Governor General approved the conferment upon the Nigerian leader, acting on the advice of the Saint Lucian Government.
According to the statement, the honour was awarded in recognition of President Tinubu’s “exceptional leadership on the African continent,” his “commitment to advancing South-South cooperation,” and his significant contributions to “rekindling cultural, historical, and diplomatic ties with the Caribbean.”
Tinubu, who is currently on a historic state visit to Saint Lucia as part of a wider diplomatic tour across the Caribbean and South America, becomes one of a select few African leaders to receive the prestigious title.
The Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia is typically reserved for individuals who have rendered distinguished national or international service of exceptional merit to the island nation. The honour underscores Saint Lucia’s acknowledgment of Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic outreach under Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which seeks to reposition Africa’s largest democracy as a global leader in diplomacy and cultural engagement.
Established in 1985, the Order of Saint Lucia is the country’s premier honours system, with the rank of Knight Commander being the second-highest level — surpassed only by the Grand Cross.
