Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to send additional weapons to Ukraine, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Moscow amid Russia’s latest territorial gains in its prolonged war against its neighbor.
Speaking to journalists at the White House on Monday, Trump emphasized Ukraine’s urgent need for support amid intensifying Russian assaults.
“We’re going to have to send more weapons — defensive weapons primarily,” Trump stated.
“They’re getting hit very, very hard,” he added, while noting his displeasure with Russian President Vladimir Putin: “I’m not happy with him.”
According to U.S. news outlet Axios, Trump has already promised to send 10 Patriot interceptor systems, bolstering Ukraine’s air defense as Russian drone and missile attacks continue to escalate.
The announcement comes on the heels of confusion in Kyiv after Washington temporarily paused some arms shipments, catching Ukrainian officials off guard and prompting concern over their ability to repel intensified Russian offensives.
Russia responded strongly to Trump’s pledge. On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized the move, saying:
“It is obvious of course that these actions probably do not align with attempts to promote a peaceful resolution,”
as quoted by Russian state news agencies during a press briefing.
Moscow had just claimed new ground in Ukraine, declaring the capture of its first village in the Dnipropetrovsk region, after months of heavy fighting. Russia also launched a fresh wave of drone and missile strikes, including attacks on Ukraine’s military recruitment centers.
In retaliation, Ukrainian forces reported carrying out a drone strike on a Russian ammunition facility in the Moscow region.
Trump’s renewed support for Ukraine signals a strategic shift following last week’s brief halt in U.S. arms supplies. With the war now stretching into its third year, the geopolitical stakes remain high — and the path to peace appears more uncertain than ever.
