The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have announced that they will be closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in observance of the public holiday declared by the Nigerian government to honour the late former president, Muhammadu Buhari.
In an official statement posted on its social media platforms, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria confirmed:
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in observance of the public holiday declared by the Nigerian government in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled.”
Federal Government Declares National Public Holiday
The announcement comes after Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a national public holiday in honour of former President Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, in a London hospital at the age of 82.
Tunji-Ojo said the holiday is part of a seven-day national mourning period, during which all flags across the country will be flown at half-mast.
U.S. Mission Reschedules Consular Appointments
The U.S. Embassy also reassured applicants affected by the closure that all visa interviews and consular appointments scheduled for that day will be rescheduled. Updates will be communicated via official channels, and individual applicants will receive instructions on how to rebook.
Buhari’s Burial Set for July 15
Late President Muhammadu Buhari will be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, by Islamic rites.
The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, is currently in London to oversee the repatriation of Buhari’s body alongside other top government officials.
