Why We Chose ADC, Accuses APC of Undermining Democracy – David Mark

Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, unveiled the ADC on Wednesday as the unified platform for Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring it a bold move to rescue the country’s crumbling democracy.

Speaking during the formal unveiling in Abuja, Mark emphasized that the decision to adopt the ADC was not just about seizing political power, but about safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic institutions, which he said are “crumbling under the current administration.”

“This coalition is not merely about gaining political power. It is a concerted effort to rebuild the pillars of our democracy and prevent Nigeria’s descent into a one-party state,” Mark stated.

The coalition comprises a broad alliance of opposition parties, youth movements, civil society groups, and pro-democracy advocates, with a mission to address insecurity, poverty, and governance failures.

Mark accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of hijacking democratic structures and steering the nation toward a “civilian dictatorship,” adding that the party is more concerned with retaining power than serving the Nigerian people.

“We have never seen a government so much at home with corruption, a government that disdains accountability… one that focuses on the next election rather than the survival of ordinary Nigerians,” he said.

Describing the ADC as a “fortress of democratic revival,” Mark pledged to build a party grounded in inclusivity, rule of law, and transparency.

“Here, the North shall hold hands with the South, the youth shall find equal footing with the elders… for the triumph of Nigeria herself.”

He further urged Nigerians—especially youths, women, and victims of insecurity—to rally behind the coalition, framing it as a historic rescue mission to reclaim the soul of the nation.

“Let history record that when our democracy faltered, we rose, not in fear, but in faith. The opposition is united. The platform is ADC. The time is now.”

With this unveiling, the ADC officially becomes the face of Nigeria’s united opposition in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
