Desmond Elliot, the lawmaker representing Surulere 1 Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has emphasized the importance of civic participation, stating that it is unfair for individuals to demand government support without first contributing through voting.
The actor-turned-politician made the remarks on Saturday, shortly after casting his vote at Onitolo Nursery/Primary School, Unit 009, Surulere, during the local government elections across Lagos State.
“You can’t sit at home and later come to seek help from people who sacrificed to vote others into power,” Desmond Elliot stated.
While expressing concern over the low voter turnout, he remained optimistic that more residents would eventually show up at the polls as the day progressed.
Desmond Elliot noted that local government elections should garner more interest than even presidential polls, due to their direct impact on daily life. “Development begins at the grassroots level. With powers and revenue now devolved to local governments, this election holds significant importance,” he added.
He urged voters to exercise their franchise wisely, stressing that the elected officials would have a direct influence on essential services such as primary healthcare, market operations, and maintenance of inner-city roads.
In conclusion, Desmond Elliot called for greater public awareness about the role and responsibilities of local governments, urging citizens to be more proactive in selecting leaders who will prioritize their communities’ development.
