The Nigerian government has confirmed the closure of about 13,597,057 social media accounts across major platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
According to the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, the accounts were taken down due to offensive content and violations of the code of practice guiding the use of interactive computer service platforms in the country.
The report, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), highlighted the collective efforts of global tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok in safeguarding online spaces.
A statement released on Wednesday by NITDA spokesperson, Hadiza Umar, revealed that a staggering 58,909,112 pieces of offensive content were removed from different social media platforms. She added that 754,629 user complaints were received, while 420,439 posts were removed and later re-uploaded after user appeals.
“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and the platforms’ community guidelines. The submission of these reports marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and responsible digital environment for Nigerian users. We remain committed to working with industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners to further strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” the statement read.
The government commended the social media platforms for their compliance and reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and responsible digital space in Nigeria.
