Singer Jessie J has spoken candidly about her battle with breast cancer, revealing how the illness has deeply affected her time with her young son.
The Price Tag star, who publicly shared her diagnosis in early June, underwent a full mastectomy later that month. Jessie J opened up about her journey in the latest episode of Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, recorded in two parts—first shortly after her diagnosis in May, and later following her surgery.
Speaking about the toll it has taken on her family life, Jessie admitted that she has struggled with missing out on moments with her two-year-old son, Sky, whom she shares with her partner, Chanan Colman.
“Yesterday I sobbed. I feel like I can’t be a mum to my son and I miss him,” the 37-year-old told Laing. “I feel like cancer has robbed me of memories with my boy.”
She continued, “I have missed stuff with the treatment and stuff moves so fast when you have a toddler. Some days are awful.”
The Do It Like a Dude singer also revealed she had moments where she feared she might not survive. “I had moments where I thought, ‘This is going to go left and I’m going to die,’” she confessed, adding that the experience has nonetheless pushed her personal growth.
“But I weirdly kind of enjoy bad things happening to me sometimes as it means I need to grow. I believe bad things happen to me so I can help other people who will then go through it.”
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Jessie J recalled bursting into tears upon hearing the news. “The doctors had said it was probably just a cyst, so I wasn’t too worried. The lump was about 4-5 centimetres of cancer,” she shared.
Jessie Jalso disclosed that she will need to undergo further surgery as part of her recovery journey.
