Activist Aisha Yesufu has openly challenged lawyer Deji Adeyanju to present evidence supporting his claims that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is a fraud.
Yesufu, a vocal supporter of Obi, stated that while she continues to back the former Anambra State governor, the evidence Adeyanju insists he has would determine whether she maintains her support or withdraws it.
Her statement was made in response to the ongoing feud between Obi and Adeyanju. The lawyer has repeatedly accused Obi of political fraud, prompting Obi’s legal team to file a defamation suit against him.
Taking to her 𝕏 account on Friday, Yesufu wrote:
“Barrister Deji Adeyanju @adeyanjudeji has repeatedly said that he has evidence to show that Mr Peter Obi @PeterObi is a fraud and that Mr Peter Obi should sue him. This is a lawyer speaking!
As a supporter of Mr Peter Obi, I am interested in the evidence the Barrister has. I would not be one to give support to anyone that is fraudulent so this case will offer me and millions of others the opportunity to have access to the evidence Barrister Deji has so we know whether to continue our support for Mr Peter Obi or withdraw it.”
Yesufu further noted that Obi’s decision to seek legal redress was the “civil thing to do,” stressing that defamation cases are best resolved in court. She added that if Obi had resorted to using state powers to silence Adeyanju, she would have been at the forefront of demanding his release.
“Mr Peter Obi going to court is the civil thing to do. Where one is defamed especially from a LAWYER, then one should go to court.
If Mr Peter Obi had used machinery of the State to get Barrister Deji arrested and thrown into jail like many of the dictators we fight are doing then I would be leading a #FreeDejiAdeyanju and calling out Mr Peter Obi!
As for now, #LetsHaveTheEvidence!”
Her comments have sparked fresh debates online as Nigerians await further developments in the court case.
