EPL: ‘Sometimes I want to quit’ – Amorim laments after shock Carabao Cup exit

Reuben Amorim

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has delivered a fiery outburst following his side’s stunning Carabao Cup defeat to League Two outfit Grimsby Town, admitting there are times he “hates” his players and even contemplates quitting the job.

The 40-year-old Portuguese manager’s brutally honest comments have rocked Old Trafford, coming after United suffered their first-ever loss to a fourth-tier club in competitive football. The shock exit, sealed on penalties at Blundell Park, has only intensified questions over Amorim’s future.

Speaking after the match, Amorim confessed:

“Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to stay here for 20 years.”

He added that his passionate reactions often spark speculation but insisted he would not change his style:

“I know people say I should be calmer, but this is my way. That’s why I have the passion I have. In that moment, I was really upset and really disappointed, and I’m going to be who I am. So prepare yourself.”

Despite the defeat, Amorim is said to retain the backing of United’s ownership, who invested nearly £200m this summer to bring in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo, and Benjamin Sesko. However, United are still winless this season after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw with Fulham in the Premier League.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash with Burnley, Amorim urged his players to bounce back:

“We played badly for 30 minutes against Fulham, and that kind of performance [against Grimsby] I was really disappointed with everything, but now it’s a new game and we focus on that.”
