The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to stage a nationwide rally on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, to press the Federal Government to meet its long-standing demands.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, the union’s Zonal Coordinator, Adeola Oyebisi Egbedokun, said the rallies mark ASUU’s first major response to what it described as the government’s continued inaction.
According to Egbedokun, the demonstrations will take place simultaneously across universities in the country, with academic activities suspended during the rallies.
He disclosed that ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) has given the government until its meeting scheduled for August 28 to address the union’s demands, after which further action will be decided.
“For over two years, we have kept faith with dialogue and refrained from strikes, but our patience has reached its limit,” Egbedokun said.
Warning of possible escalation if issues remain unresolved, he added:
“If the government continues to play games with the future of our universities, then it must bear the consequences of the storm that will follow.”
The rally comes amid renewed agitation by ASUU over funding, welfare, and the revitalization of Nigeria’s public universities.
