Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made the clarification through one of his spokespersons during the 2023 election, Tunde Olusunle, while reacting to reports suggesting he was no longer desperate for the presidency.
Olusunle revealed that Atiku, speaking from his holiday home in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), disowned the earlier comment credited to Prof. Ola Olateju, who represented him at an event in Lagos.
According to Olusunle, there was no prior engagement with Olateju to align on his views.
“I did not issue that statement. When people stand in for me at events, we preview my thoughts on the subject so we are on the same page. In this particular instance, there was no engagement with me. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me,” he clarified.
Reaffirming his ambition, he declared
“I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned. The degeneration in our country, the level of poverty and pain, the anguish, is unacceptable.”
Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 election, said his mission remains to rebuild and reposition Nigeria.
