Nationwide Flight Disruption Looms as Aviation Unions Direct NAMA Workers to Down Tools From August 11

Algiers-Abuja direct flight service begins April 6

Nigeria’s aviation industry may face a total shutdown beginning Monday, August 11, 2025, as four major aviation unions have jointly directed staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to withdraw their services indefinitely.

The development follows the failure of the federal government to implement a new salary structure that was agreed upon more than eight months ago.

In a strongly worded joint notice issued on Thursday, August 7, the unions expressed deep frustration with what they describe as “unjustifiable delays” and neglect by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, headed by Festus Keyamo.

The directive was signed by:

  • National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE)

  • Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN)

  • Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP)

  • Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE)

What’s at Stake?

The unions had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister, demanding immediate action on the salary issue. With the deadline now expired, they are moving forward with plans to shut down all NAMA services, a move that could cripple flight operations across Nigeria.

“We can no longer tolerate the delay in implementing the new salary structure, which was negotiated and agreed upon over eight months ago,” the statement read.

“The strike will affect all NAMA facilities and air traffic operations nationwide.”

Major Disruption Expected in Aviation Sector

If implemented, the strike action will impact air traffic control, flight planning, and navigation services — key components that ensure safe take-offs and landings at all Nigerian airports.

Background of the Dispute

In a joint letter dated July 31, 2025, the unions reminded the Minister that their patience had worn thin. Despite completing negotiations with NAMA management and reaching an agreement on salary adjustments, no implementation has followed, nor has there been formal communication explaining the delay.

Next Steps

The unions have advised airline operators, airport authorities, and passengers to prepare for major disruptions starting Monday.

Unless the federal government intervenes swiftly to resolve the dispute, this strike could ground Nigeria’s entire aviation industry, impacting both domestic and international flights.
