Andre Onana has returned to the Manchester United squad and could make his first start of the season when the Red Devils face Fulham on Sunday.
The Cameroon international has been included in the 21-man travelling squad to Craven Cottage and is “in line” to replace Altay Bayindir, who came under heavy criticism for his role in Arsenal’s winning goal at Old Trafford on the opening weekend. Both Onana and Bayindir are available, though manager Ruben Amorim has kept his choice of starting goalkeeper under wraps.
Onana has faced frequent criticism since joining United, and his injury during pre-season raised further doubts about his long-term role. Despite speculation over possible reinforcements, United have yet to sign a new goalkeeper, leaving the former Inter and Ajax star in contention to reclaim his spot after missing out on the opening game due to fitness concerns.
Talks with Royal Antwerp’s young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens have reportedly gathered pace, with a potential £17 million ($23m) move on the horizon. Should that deal go through, Bayindir may find his place under greater threat, though Onana is not expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.
If handed the start against Fulham, Onana will have the ideal chance to re-establish himself as United’s first-choice goalkeeper before any new competition arrives. While United’s summer transfers have bolstered their attack, Amorim faces mounting pressure to tighten up defensively if the team is to push back up the Premier League table.
