Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has come under heavy criticism after his mistake gifted Arsenal an early goal in Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford.
Manager Ruben Amorim handed Bayindir a start ahead of Andre Onana, but the Turkish shot-stopper failed to impress. From an Arsenal corner, he was outmuscled by William Saliba, leaving Riccardo Calafiori with a simple header to put the visitors ahead.
United have spent big this summer to strengthen their attack with the signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, but defensive frailties continue to undermine their progress.
Goalkeeping has been a persistent concern for the Red Devils. Last season, Onana was guilty of several high-profile mistakes, and Bayindir’s display suggests he may not be the long-term solution either.
Adding to the frustration, Arsenal’s opener highlighted their set-piece dominance. The Gunners have now scored 31 goals from corners in the Premier League since the start of 2023–24—nearly three times more than closest rivals Liverpool (11) in the same period.
The latest blunder has sparked calls for United to sell Bayindir and address their ongoing goalkeeping crisis once and for all.
