Chelsea have confirmed that defender Levi Colwill will miss most — if not all — of the 2025/26 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The 22-year-old suffered the injury just days after rejoining preseason training at Cobham, during a non-contact drill in which he reportedly lost his footing and immediately signaled for medical assistance.
In a statement, the club revealed that Colwill underwent immediate surgical intervention, which was successful, and has now begun rehabilitation under Chelsea’s medical staff.
Maresca: “A Huge Blow”
Manager Enzo Maresca expressed his disappointment:
“Levi was a key part of our plans for the season. His leadership and composure at the back will be sorely missed.”
Impact on Chelsea’s Defence
Colwill’s absence forces Chelsea to reshuffle their defensive setup. Options include new signing Jorrel Hato, as well as Wesley Fofana, Benoît Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, and Tosin Adarabioyo.
ACL recovery timelines typically range from six to twelve months, meaning Colwill’s return could be delayed until the 2026 preseason depending on his rehab progress.
The setback is a major personal and tactical blow for the England international, who was expected to be central to Maresca’s backline this season.
