Liverpool kicked off their Premier League title defence with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night, thanks to late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah.
The Reds took an early lead through Hugo Ekitike before Cody Gakpo doubled the advantage. However, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo turned the game on its head, scoring twice to level the match.
Semenyo’s brace came on an emotional night, as he had earlier reported an incident of racial abuse from a supporter. His goals looked set to earn the Cherries a valuable point.
But in the dying minutes, injury-hit forward Federico Chiesa restored Liverpool’s lead with a stunning strike, before Salah sealed the win to the delight of the Anfield crowd.
The match also carried extra emotional weight, as fans and players paid tribute to Diogo Jota.
