My One-Term Pledge Is About Service, Not Ambition – Peter Obi

AIRS Refutes Peter Obi’s Claim That SABMiller Is Anambra’s Top Taxpayer

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed surprise and concern over the growing agitation surrounding his pledge to serve only one term if elected president of Nigeria.

Taking to his official social media platform, Obi reiterated that his desire to serve a single four-year term stems not from personal ambition, but from a sincere commitment to help rebuild Nigeria.

“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” he wrote.
“By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”

“If the Sacrifice Is Four Years of Accountable Leadership, So Be It”

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, stated that leadership should not be about entitlement or desperation, but about accountability, service, and measurable results.

“What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep commitment to see Nigeria work. And if the sacrifice required of me is four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it,” he declared.

He emphasized that under honest and focused leadership, Nigeria could witness significant reforms in the span of four years, including:

  • Confronting corruption head-on

  • Redirecting resources from wasteful spending to education, healthcare, and infrastructure

  • Upholding the rule of law

  • Conducting free, fair, and credible elections

Obi further challenged critics to examine his political history, asserting that his career has been free of electoral malpractice, violence, or desperation.

“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice,” he said.
“I believe in fair competition, not manufactured victories.”

He added that no political opponent has ever been intimidated, denied their rights, or forced to overspend because of his candidacy.

Obi’s Message to Nigerians

Peter Obi closed his statement by reaffirming his readiness to serve, stating that one honest term is enough to begin turning Nigeria around.

“Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service. If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all,” he concluded.
