The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a formal apology to candidates and the general public following the technical glitches experienced in the recently released 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, explained that the errors were linked to a newly introduced security measure—paper serialisation—aimed at curbing examination malpractice.
“As part of our efforts to curb examination malpractice, the Council embarked on an innovation (paper serialisation),” the statement read.
“The paper serialisation was carried out in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.”
Following the release of the results, a post-examination review revealed technical bugs affecting these key subjects. Consequently, WAEC temporarily disabled access to the online result-checking portal to prevent further confusion.
“The Council, being a responsive body that is sensitive to fairness and professionalism, has decided to urgently review and correct the technical glitches,” WAEC stated.
Candidates were advised to recheck their results after 24 hours, as the council worked to resolve the problem swiftly.
By Thursday evening, WAEC confirmed that the technical issues had been fixed, and candidates could now re-access their results online.
However, the development sparked outrage across social media, with students and parents expressing frustration over what many described as an “avoidable embarrassment.” Some users claimed their results were “messed up” and demanded further clarification from the exam body.
Others criticized WAEC’s digital infrastructure, citing repeated technical lapses not only from WAEC but also from JAMB and other public examination bodies.
Despite the backlash, WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining fairness, professionalism, and innovation in its examination processes.
“We extend our deep and sincere apologies. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all candidates as we worked diligently to resolve the matter with transparency and urgency,” Adesina added.
