The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to commit to building strong, law-abiding political parties that transcend individual interests and are bigger than any government.
Obi made this call during the public presentation of two books — The Bubbles of Nigeria’s Democracy: The Musings of a Nigerian Journalist and Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist — authored by veteran journalist Ike Abonyi.
Speaking at the event, the former Anambra State governor emphasized the importance of political structures rooted in lasting values and national development.
“We are working hard to build that new Nigeria where we are going to have political parties that will outlive us, that is organised, that will be bigger than the government.”
Peter Obi also charged Nigerian journalists, especially those with in-depth knowledge of the country’s political terrain, to document their insights and experiences for the benefit of future generations.
According to Peter Obi, storytelling and analysis by seasoned media professionals are vital tools in educating citizens and shaping a better understanding of Nigeria’s complex political system.
His remarks come amid growing public calls for institutional reforms and a reorientation of Nigeria’s political culture — away from personalities and power grabs, and toward ideology, transparency, and service.
